Dr. Wilkins, what are the different types of diagnostic tests performed on low back or neck conditions

We’ll start with the imaging that can be performed on either the low back or neck, which could be x-rays, MRI, Cat Scans or CT Scans (Computerized Axial Tomography), also a myelogram and discogram. These have all been explained in other questions, but I’ll be brief on all of them.

Can a person have a herniated disc without back pain?

The answer to that question is yes. I am a research nut; I read 5 – 10 new research papers per week. When they started to do MRIs, they wanted to find out what would be the percentage of people that were asymptomatic (no pain) that would in fact have herniation or bulges in their low back. Now, the reason for checking the low back is that 80% of all herniations are in the low back compared to the cervical spine. What they did was take 100 people that were asymptomatic (no pain) and did an MRI of their low back and found that 50% of half of them had herniations or bulges in their low back.

Questions About Spinal Decompression Series: Is axial decompression a chiropractic procedure?

No, Lumbar axial decompression was developed by Dr. Alan Dyer, a former Canadian Deputy Minister of Health. He was the developer of the VAX-D. That was in 1975 and his reason for designing the table was that he had disc problems and was confined to a wheel chair. The VAX-D was a success with Dr. Dyer and he now practices in Florida, still using spinal decompression.

Spinal Decompression Research: The Side Effects of Surgery

In explaining to my patients the significant risks of surgery for disc conditions, I often refer to Dr. Richard Busch’s extensive work on the subject in his book, “Surgery Not Included”. Here he explains the possible surgical outcomes:

Painless Treatment for Low Back Pain & Neck Pain —The DRS™ Protocol

The DRS™ Protocol is a non-surgical, drug-free, painless treatment for Low Back Pain & Neck Pain that allows you to keep working and doing the things you enjoy. It has shown to be a very Successful Alternative to Surgery, Drugs and other Pain Management techniques. This is a proprietary protocol, and only practiced by Dr. Larry Wilkins in this area.

Using the best, cutting edge technology & equipment available to U.S. doctors, Wilkins Spinal Care is able to offer a new alternative to people suffering from cervical or lumbar pain. Through the use of this protocol and equipment, Dr. Wilkins and his team have been able to decompress the disc that have herniation, bulging or degeneration. This allows the nutrient flow to return to the disc to aid in the healing process.

DRS™ simply stands for: Decompression – Reduction – Stabilization

To break this apart, we start by introducing axial (distractive) force to the injured disc creating negative pressure and ultimately diffusion of nutrients, water and oxygen that are needed to help heal the injury. This process uses a cyclical (or repetitive) decompression of positive/negative presssures that help to reduce the pressure in the disc and retract the herniated core of the disc from the nerves. Finally, we work with our patients – even after the pain is gone – to stabilize the condition making it less likely to return.

This process focuses on problem at the disc level, where other therapies don’t target the problem to aid in healing, they simply temporarily (if at all) relieve some of the pain. Using precise instruments, computers, and computerized belting systems (as pictured above in our office) target that disc for healing – without surgery, pain or drugs!

An MRI is beneficial for viewing soft tissue such as nerves, muscles, ligaments, and organs as well as bones. Both x-rays and MRIs are excellent tools for seeing the placement and alignment of the spine, as well as the damage to surrounding tissue.

Whiplash injury and its symptoms

Because of this being a touchy subject, I went to my radiology text book, Essentials of Skeletal Radiology. According to this text book, “The so-called whiplash syndrome is a common clinical condition that has received a high volume of published material since the 1960s, much of which – when scrutinized scientifically for validity – is found flawed. Neck spasms are common in all Western countries, and are reported in 20 to 60% of all motor vehicle accidents.
